On Saturday afternoon, a San Bernardino County Deputy Sheriff's routine duty rapidly escalated into a life-threatening situation alongside Highway 18 in the vicinity of Soledad Drive. According to the Sheriff-Coroner Department's release, a man wielding a knife attacked the deputy and made a dangerous attempt to snatch the officer's weapon, leading to a shooting incident.
The confrontation began when the deputy identified an individual resembling the suspect of a recent burglary. Initial interactions took a southward turn as the suspect provided false identification and fled, only to resist and aggressively confront the deputy with a knife. The Sheriff’s Department reported that during the altercation, the suspect, 31-year-old Joshua Sonny Ramirez, "attempted to disarm the deputy," which regrettably necessitated the use of lethal force.
Ramirez was struck by gunfire yet survived the encounter, receiving prompt medical attention from the deputies present before being transported to a local hospital. Currently listed in stable condition, Ramirez faces serious charges of Attempted Murder of a Peace Officer pending his release from the hospital. Meanwhile, the deputy involved sustained minor injuries during the attack.
The investigation has been handed over to the Specialized Investigations Division, with Detective Vanayes Quezada at the helm. Anyone who possesses information that could aid the ongoing investigation is encouraged actively to reach out. Contacts for Detective Quezada and Sergeant Justin Giles have been provided, alongside a tip line for those wishing to remain anonymous.
