San Diego Breaks Ground on Inclusive Pride Promenade Project in HillcrestSource: City of San Diego

San Diego is taking a bold step forward in celebrating its LGBTQ community with the groundbreaking of the long-anticipated Pride Promenade. Mayor Todd Gloria, joined by local civic leaders and the Hillcrest community, marked the commencement of construction on the project, which will revamp a section of Normal Street into a pedestrian-centric space. As reported by the City of San Diego, Mayor Gloria expressed that this endeavor is "a historic moment" that signifies a commitment to inclusivity and a reflection of the city's diversity.

Under the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) stewardship, Pride Promenade will see the transformation of western traffic lanes on Normal Street between University and Lincoln Avenues into a pedestrian walkway and rainbow bikeway. Meanwhile, the two eastern lanes will continue to serve vehicular traffic. This initiative has secured a significant part of its funding from the City of San Diego, with an additional $1.2 million coming from the state, largely thanks to the efforts of State Assemblymember Chris Ward. Ward shared his vision with the City of San Diego, expressing that the project "sends a powerful message: San Diego is a city that embraces diversity, fosters belonging, and celebrates the contributions of every resident."

The scope of the Pride Promenade includes the expansion of Pride Plaza, enhancement of the locality with a children's play area, the introduction of historic lampposts, and the incorporation of ample seating and shade structures. With approximately 115 new trees and a restored vintage trolley car designated for commercial use, the project nods to the area's historical roots as a main trolley line. It also interlaces with the Eastern Hillcrest Bikeway project, furthering the city's commitment to sustainable and safe transportation, with the overall plan to add 13 more parking spaces.

City Councilmember Stephen Whitburn, representing District 3, believes "Pride Promenade will expand Pride Plaza, create safer walking and biking paths, and honor Hillcrest’s rich history and culture." Per the City of San Diego, his remarks encapsulate the communal and cultural aspirations behind the project. The planned improvements will also accommodate the Hillcrest Farmers Market and public events like the San Diego Pride Festival and Parade, solidifying the area's status as a central community and celebratory space.
