
This morning, San Mateo residents witnessed a real-time crime unfold when two suspects engaged in mail theft from an apartment complex on La Selva Street. According to the San Mateo Police Department, a vigilante community member reported the break-in at approximately 1:01 a.m., prompting a swift response from local law enforcement. The suspects, later identified as James Spearman and Erika Martinez, attempted to make their getaway in a U-Haul van but were intercepted by police officers after a quick pursuit into San Francisco.
The police chase ended on the 900 block of Florida Street, where Spearman and Martinez were apprehended as they tried to quickly run away from the scene. An investigation into the van's contents revealed an assortment of stolen items, including personal identification and social security cards, linking the suspects to thefts affecting over a hundred individuals across the Bay Area. In addition to the stolen mail, items from a separate auto burglary in San Mateo were also recovered.
Following the arrests, Spearman, a 38-year-old Antioch resident, and Martinez, a 42-year-old San Francisco resident, now face multiple charges. They've been booked into San Mateo County Jail with accusations including conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of a controlled substance. The full list of charges against the duo paints a picture of a premeditated spree, encompassing identity theft of 10 or more people and receipt or possession of stolen property.
Authorities continue to investigate and reach out to might be additional victims, piecing together the extent of Spearman and Martinez's alleged crimes.
