Commuters navigating through Seminole County can expect to see the familiar orange cones and construction crews for several years as the widely used Seminole Expressway, also known as State Road (SR) 417, undergoes a significant expansion. According to a recent announcement by Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, the road will be widened from four to eight lanes starting from the stretch between Aloma Avenue/SR 426 and just north of SR 434. This expansion aims to accommodate increasing traffic and enhance overall roadway efficiency in the region.

With an estimated completion date of late 2030, the project is not just about adding extra lanes. It includes replacing five bridges, widening and improving 12 existing ones, and resurfacing roads under SR 417. In a statement obtained by the City of Oviedo's official website, the benefits outlined extend to "increasing roadway longevity and resiliency," "enhancing the movement of people, goods, and services," "strengthening pedestrian safety with underdeck lighting," and "improving roadside safety" through updated signage and pavement markings.

As part of the traffic management plan, most lane closures will be strategically scheduled during off-peak hours to reduce congestion and delays. The Central and West Central Florida Weekly Lane Closures and Work Zone Advisory will communicate these closures and any pertinent updates. The entire undertaking, as it stands, has a sticker price of approximately $300 million, reflecting not just the scope of the construction but also the promise of a smoother ride for the millions who traverse this expressway annually.

Residents and commuters can visit the City of Oviedo's official website for more detailed information and future updates on the SR 417 Widening Project.
