The Shelby County Bluebird Club is searching for volunteers to fill leadership positions and continue their conservation efforts. The local club, which is crucial for the preservation of the bluebird population in Shelby County, finds itself at a pivotal moment. Should it not find individuals to take on roles such as President and Treasurer, there's a real chance the club could be forced to disband.

Volunteers will be mainly responsible to monitor and maintain hundreds of nest boxes, many of which are located along the Germantown Greenway and at Bobby Lanier Farm Park. The club's efforts last year resulted in the successful fledging of 997 bluebirds, as stated on the City of Germantown's official website. With critical vacancies such as Membership Chair, Secretary, and Data Collector unfilled, their mission is under threat.

The importance of these roles is underscored by the fact that the Shelby County Bluebird Club is one of only seven chapters of the Tennessee Bluebird Society in the region. Their work includes developing nest box trails, collecting significant research data on bluebird populations, and ensuring that the habitat for cavity-nesting birds is preserved. The absence of new officers could also lead to the club losing its affiliation with the Tennessee Bluebird Society, which would be a significant blow to local conservation efforts.

Germantown recognizes the Eastern Bluebird, with its distinctive blue upper plumage and rust-brown chest, as an important symbol of the community. Germantown Mayor Mike Palazzolo proclaimed the bird the official bird of the city on March 21, 2021, emphasizing the city's commitment to sustainable practices.
