Travel plans were thrown into disarray last night for commuters using Penn Station, as a signal issue caused significant delays for NJ Transit, Amtrak, and LIRR services. According to ABC7 New York, both NJ Transit and Amtrak were hit with delays reaching up to 90 minutes, and at the time of reporting, there was no clear indication of when the normal service would resume.
The Long Island Rail Road also felt the ripple effects, with the agency reporting delays of 45 to 60 minutes systemwide. However, by 11 p.m., they were operating on or close to a normal schedule, though some residual delays persisted beyond Jamaica. NBC New York provided an update, "LIRR had been reporting 45-60 minute systemwide delays, but by 11p.m., service was back to operating on or close to schedule. Though there were still scattered residual delays east of Jamaica, the railroad said." Despite this reprieve, the struggle for a timely commute loomed large for many.
NBC New York detailed the unfolding events via social media posts from NJ Transit, saying, "Due to Amtrak signal issues service is suspended into and out of Penn Station New York," a predicament that lasted well into the evening until services began tentatively moving with an hour's delay after 11:30 p.m.
Amtrak took to X to announce the halt of all train services into and out of New York due to signal complications, warning that movement was affected by communication issues with no estimated delay time. Travelers were assured that updates would follow as more information became available.
