As Snohomish County grapples with winter weather, the Snohomish County Public Works Road Maintenance teams have been relentless in their efforts to keep the roads safe and navigable. According to a recent statement, these tireless crews plowed a staggering 16,000 miles of road, the equivalent of going back and forth between Everett and Miami more than four times over the last few days. They've been on this around-the-clock operation since Wednesday night, and don't seem to be slowing down as the weekend approaches.
In a proactive measure, "We are continuing to monitor the forecast and are pre-treating as many locations as possible to stay ahead of freezing temperatures and ice," Public Works Director Kelly Snyder stated. Their readiness includes a surplus of materials required for continued road treatment in case the frosty conditions persist. Even as the snowfall is expected to taper off during the weekend, the crews will adjust their operations but remain prepared for rapid response to emergent situations, a clear sign of their commitment to community safety and mobility.
The Public Works Department maintains over 1,600 miles of road in unincorporated Snohomish County, following a systematic approach to their clearance operations. Priority routes, which cater to significant traffic volumes and access to emergency services, are cleared first. Subsequently, secondary and tertiary routes get attention. This ensures the most critical paths remain open during inclement weather conditions.
Road conditions can change quickly, and as the snow and ice begin to melt by day, there's an emphasis on residents to keep storm drains clear to prevent ponding and refreezing on the roads at night. Snyder recommended that residents, "check their travel routes and allow additional time for travel." This practical advice aims to minimize travel risks and disruptions as the county weathers the seasonal challenges.
The County has deployed a suite of resources to aid residents through these snowy and icy conditions. The Snow and Ice Response webpage stands as a hub for all information related to winter road maintenance, including maps indicating recently plowed or treated roads, and the status of road closures. Additionally, during emergencies such as these, the Snohomish County Public Safety Hub provides vital resources and warming shelter locations for those in need. Motorists and residents are also encouraged to follow Snohomish County on social media for the latest updates during this emergency event.
