A tragic event in South Los Angeles has left a community grieving and law enforcement on the hunt for a hit-and-run driver. On Saturday night, two vehicles—a grey Dodge Charger and a dark-colored Chevrolet Tahoe—were involved in a street race that resulted in the death of an innocent woman.
The victim, unfortunately caught in the dangerous path of the race, was walking outside an unmarked crosswalk at around 10 p.m. on Normandie Avenue near 66th Street when she was struck by the Charger. The driver of the Charger did not stop to offer aid and fled the scene, police say. The details of the incident were shared in a FOX LA report citing a Los Angeles Police Department press release yesterday.
The Los Angeles Fire Department promptly responded to the scene and transported the woman to a local hospital. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased. Further specifics regarding the extent of the victim's injuries or the suspect's description have not been released by authorities, nor is it known if the woman was a spectator of the race or just a bystander.
In the aftermath of the tragic incident, the LAPD is calling on the public for assistance. Officer Cha of the South Traffic Division can be reached directly with any relevant information during weekday business hours. Additional resources for anonymous tips are available through the LA Regional Crime Stoppers, as stated in a news release from the LAPD. Both sources underline the citywide initiative that offers a hefty reward of up to $50,000 for information that could lead to the successful identification, arrest, and conviction of those responsible for this and similar hit-and-run offenses.
