The Sparta Police Department released dashboard camera footage from an on-duty officer's cruiser involved in a collision with an SUV last Friday. The video captures the moments just before the SUV, pulling out from a local business driveway, was struck by the police vehicle on South State Street. As reported by FOX 17, snow and debris were seen scattering as the two vehicles impacted.
In the wake of the event, Kent County investigators concluded the SUV driver had failed to yield to traffic, with the officer being deemed attentive at the time of the crash. According to the Sparta Police, the officer had only between 1.5 seconds and 70-80 feet to respond to the unfolding situation. Despite efforts to prevent the crash, demonstrated by a visible nose dip of the cruiser just before impact, slick road conditions rendered the collision inevitable. "Recognizing a dangerous situation and applying the brake pedal in approximately 1/3 of a second is an extremely fast response time," stated the Sparta Police in a post on social media, affirming the officer's quick reaction to the threat, shared by WOODTV.
The Sparta Police Department made the dash-cam recording public in the interest of full transparency. The footage details the sequence of events from when the SUV began moving into the cruiser's path until the collision, which took roughly two seconds. The swift braking maneuver by the officer, taking less than half a second after the SUV entered the road, signifies an attempt to avert the crash. However, the braking ultimately proved insufficient due to the weather conditions.
The aftermath of the crash resulted in injuries to the SUV driver, while the police officer involved did not sustain any harm. Precise details, including the gravity of the SUV driver's injuries, were not immediately disclosed, though they were noted to be minor.
