In a meaningful step towards enhancing the lives of its senior residents, St. Johns County marked a new chapter with the groundbreaking ceremony for the Shelter and Shade capital improvement project at the Council on Aging headquarters. According to the St. Johns County announcement, the event took place this morning, attended by the likes of Commissioner Krista Joseph and County Administrator Joy Andrews. The project, with a budget set at $1.28 million for its initial phase, aims to upgrade the facility at 180 Marine Street, making the entrance more accessible and providing shelter from rain and sun for the elderly who frequent the center.
The plan outlines a strategy to elevate the entrance and construct a covered portico; however, it doesn't stop there, the phase one also includes other enhancements designed to make the senior center more comfortable and welcoming. Mentioned in the same St. Johns County release, the project was buoyed by a substantial grant of $545,000 from Delores Barr Weaver's Legacy Funds, which filled the financial gap necessary to kickstart the construction. The facility itself is pivotal, housing the Coastal Community Senior Center, the Sunshine Center for adult daycare, and administrative offices for the COA.
Becky Yanni, COA's Executive Director, expressed excitement and gratitude during the ceremony, stating, "We are very excited to break ground on this project to create more ease, more comfort, and improved quality of life for seniors in our community." She was quoted in the St. Johns County report, appreciating the generosity of donors like Delores Barr Weaver for enabling these vital improvements. Local expertise is not amiss in this venture; St. Augustine's A. D. Davis Construction, the firm responsible for the COA's River House built in 2009, will oversee the modifications, offering both continuity and reassurance of quality.
Following the completion of these initial upgrades, the focus will shift to the next stage, which includes refinishing an outdoor deck and equipping it with screening to enable year-round shaded access for the Sunshine Center's adult daycare participants. Time outdoors will be more pleasurable, blending rest and nature therapy as part of a comprehensive nurturing environment. Plans also feature additional landscaping and seating, where center-goers can enjoy a moment of repose ensconced in serenity; these details are laid out in the St. Johns County disclosure of the ceremony.
