In a disturbing echo of previous incidents, Pacetti Bay Middle School in St. Johns County was thrust into a brief lockdown following a hoax call early this morning. An unidentified male claimed he was in possession of firearms and explosives, had committed a homicide, and was making threats against the school. According to a social media post from the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office (SJSO), the hoax is notably similar to one that occurred just yesterday at Landrum Middle School.
Upon receiving the call, the school's assigned youth resource deputy quickly engaged with the caller, while SJSO mobilized resources to assess and respond to the threat. While the agencies swarmed the property, later confirmed as a baseless scare, the school persisted under lockdown. Floating through the campus, the fear of students and faculty was palpable until investigators reached the conclusion that there was "no credible threat."
The SJSO stated, "As always, SJSO and the St. Johns County School District will always respond to threats with as much resources as possible until we are confident students and staff are safe." The commitment to safety is clear, but there remains a notable concern over the trend of such hoaxes.
The implications of these swatting incidents are severe, not only stirring chaos in the hearts of families, but also draining law enforcement resources which could have been diverted to actual crimes taking place. SJSO seeks to reassure the public about their dedication to the safety of not just those within the walls of Pacetti Bay, but across St. Johns County.
