Last month, a typical evening patrol took a dramatic turn for the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office Air Unit, as they became the guiding light for an aircraft in distress. The incident, which occurred on February 4, was shared recently on social media by the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.
According to the social media post by SJCO, at approximately 7 p.m., a pilot found themselves in a dire situation when their aircraft lost power over the St. Johns River. At 3,000 feet with fading daylight, the issue was compounded by an unlit private airfield runway that vanished into the encroaching night.
Responding to the call for help, SJSO Pilot Casey Kumar and Tactical Flight Officer Stephen Reece located the aircraft, which had regained some power but was hovering at a precarious 1,500 feet. In a quick-witted move, the air unit used their helicopter's spotlight to illuminate the runway below, providing a beacon for the troubled craft to make its emergency landing.
"As part of the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office Aviation Unit, our main mission is to positively impact lives and save lives each and everyday," the statement read. "In an uncommon mission set like this one, we are extremely happy that no one was harmed and everyone went home safe." Their efforts were well-received, ensuring the aircraft touched down without further incident. The ground emergency personnel collected to assist the crew and, fortunately, no injuries were reported, as per SJCO report.
The Sheriff's Office post ended with commendations for the air unit's team, celebrating the safe resolution brought about by Pilot Kumar and TFO Reece's decisive intervention.
