The Metropolitan Police Department has apprehended an 18-year-old student following an attempted robbery and assault at a Northeast high school, authorities declared Monday. In what unfolded during the lunch hour on January 16, at a locale on the 4800 block of Meade Street, the accused, identified as Derek Weldon of Southeast, confronted a fellow student demanding his property, the Metropolitan Police Department reports.
The encounter quickly escalated when the victim resisted surrendering his belongings, leading Weldon to resort to physical assault; the terrified student managed to escape and sought the safety of school security, who were prompt in their response, calling in the Sixth District officers around 12:40 p.m., the MPD provided information outlining the sequence of events. After a thorough investigation led by detectives, Weldon was tracked down and detained yesterday in compliance with an arrest warrant issued by the D.C. Superior Court.
Now facing charges of Assault with Intent to Commit Robbery, the teen's arrest has raised grave concerns about on-campus safety and the well-being of students within these educational precincts at a time when the sanctity of learning environments is increasingly questioned. Derek Weldon's arrest details, including the charge levied against him, were confirmed by the official MPD press release, marking a swift move to address the concerns wrought by the incident.
