The case of Ole Miss student Jimmie "Jay" Lee has progressed as Timothy Herrington faces new charges. According to Action News 5, he has been re-indicted on capital murder and tampering with physical evidence following the discovery of Lee's remains in Carroll County.
Herrington's trial in late 2024 ended in a mistrial due to a hung jury. Surveillance footage showed him retrieving a shovel and wheelbarrow after Lee's disappearance. Investigators reviewed his movements that morning, including interactions with Lee, and found an online search about how long strangulation takes before she arrived at his apartment. Oxford Police Chief Jeff McCutchen said, "We will continue to work tirelessly on this case to see it to the end," as reported by Local Memphis.
Jimmie Lee, the victim’s father, acknowledged the re-indictment and new charges, stating, "Well, at the end of the day, we can only trust in the courts, trust in the law and push forward. More than anything, I’m trusting in God." With new evidence, his parents can now proceed with funeral arrangements. The defendant, Herrington, has pleaded not guilty and has a bond hearing on February 21. Judge Kelly Luther appointed two public defenders after his previous attorney left. The district attorney’s office has not confirmed whether they will seek the death penalty, as stated by FOX13 Memphis.
