A heartbreaking discovery in Westchester County has concluded the search for a missing 3-year-old boy, as authorities found the young child deceased in the Mamaroneck River. The child, who had left his residence accompanied by his dog, was reported missing yesterday afternoon, according to officials.
Following the notification around 2:30 p.m. that the boy was missing, a search was quickly convened by police. His 54-year-old uncle and 85-year-old grandfather had been the ones to alert the authorities after failing to find him in their care. As reported by NBC New York, the search parties eventually located the boy in the river near the Hillside Avenue Bridge, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The proximity of the river — approximately two blocks from the boy's home near First Street — suggests the child may have wandered to the edge and suffered a tragic accident. Police believe he fell into the Mamaroneck River and was carried downstream by the current, ultimately leading to drowning. Details of what transpired with the dog, which had initially accompanied the boy, weren't immediately available.
An investigation into the events leading up to this young life lost is now underway, with the Westchester County District Attorney's Office being brought in to assist. In a statement provided by Pix 11, investigators are piecing together the series of events that unfolded on that fateful afternoon.
