Early this morning, downtown Raleigh witnessed an unexpected incident at a local music venue, when a truck ran into the Lincoln Theatre. According to CBS 17, police were called to the scene at approximately 9:22 a.m. following reports of a vehicle collision with injuries.
The driver, who has not been publicly identified, appears to have suffered a medical emergency which led to the vehicle striking the building. This information comes from a news release by the Raleigh Police Department, indicating the driver was afterward transported to the hospital for evaluation. Substantial damage was reported at the scene, with debris scattered across the pavement and yellow caution tape cordoning off the venue's entrance, as seen in footage captured by CBS 17's crew.
In the aftermath, Mark Thompson, owner of the Lincoln Theatre, told CBS 17 that he is already in talks with his insurance company to address the situation, with efforts underway to board up the damaged entrance. The music venue is a well-known spot for live performances and local artists, making this incident especially disheartening for the community.
Adding to the account, the truck was extricated from the theater by 11 a.m., as shared by The News & Observer. Glass and wooden pieces along with other rubble were found strewn in front of the building, which was declared "unsafe" according to signage placed near the front doors. While the driver's identity remains undisclosed, police clarified that he was brought to WakeMed hospital as a precaution to examine for minor injuries after reportedly hitting the gas pedal during his medical emergency, per a statement provided by Lt. David Davis in an email to The News & Observer.
There were no other injuries reported in connection to the crash, as noted by the Raleigh Watch Commander when speaking to ABC11.
