In a tragic outbreak of violence, two individuals were killed in a shooting incident that occurred in the parking lot of the Cabarrus County Department of Social Services (DSS) in Kannapolis, North Carolina. The event unfolded this morning around 8:30 a.m. at the DSS office, located on South Cannon Boulevard. According to WBTV, officials reported that both victims were found deceased by Kannapolis police, who subsequently engaged in a chase alongside a Cabarrus County deputy in pursuit of the suspect.
The chase, which also involved officers from the Kannapolis Police Department and, eventually, deputies from Rowan County, ended about 20 miles away. The suspect reportedly ceased to flee on Lower Palmer Road in Rockwell, where he inflicted a fatal self-shot. WCCB Charlotte confirms that this ended the suspect's life. The incident seems to have been rooted in domestic conflict, with the individuals involved having known each other, authorities shared.
No DSS employees were harmed during the shooting or the ensuing chase. In the wake of the violence, the South Cannon Boulevard office will remain closed for the remainder of the day, although services will still be available via the Milestone Avenue office or through contacting the provided phone number, as reported by WBTV.
As the community grapples to understand the carnage, the names of the two victims and the suspect have yet to be disclosed by authorities. WCNC states that detectives are still piecing together the events leading up to the fatal shooting. In the meantime, the DSS office in Kannapolis will be closed, pending further investigation into the circumstances that led to such a deadly outcome.
