A house fire on Donnefield Drive in Charlotte this morning has led to two fatalities, a tragic outcome to an incident that put both residents and firefighters at risk. According to Charlotte Fire Department's Facebook post, their units responded to the blaze at the 5300 block of Donnefield Drive promptly after being alerted at 6:59 a.m. The ordeal began when Engine 23 arrived at 7:03 a.m. to heavy fire conditions and immediately initiated an aggressive fire attack.

The residence presented extreme hoarding conditions, these conditions impeded the firefighters' ability to carry out search and entry, after the initial attack, at 7:04 a.m. Ladder 23 began a primary search for any individuals still in the home just as the building's structural integrity started to decline, prompting an order for evacuation at 7:13 a.m. and then, at 7:19 a.m., Tower 3 commenced an aerial water assault to tackle the flames and keep the fire from spreading.

Finally, at 8:30 a.m., the inferno was declared under control. One inhabitant managed to escape the fire on their own and was treated for smoke inhalation, later transported to a hospital. Additionally, one firefighter was also taken out due to injuries, "Our firefighters worked tirelessly under extremely hazardous conditions to bring this fire under control," Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson said in a statement, according to Charlotte Fire Department. The same firefighter is expected to recover from their non-life-threatening injuries.

Once it was safe to re-enter the house, firefighters made the somber discovery of two deceased individuals, "This tragic loss of life is deeply felt by our department and the community," Johnson expressed, according to Charlotte Fire Department, sending thoughts to the victims' families; the cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Charlotte Fire Investigation Task Force.
