In a show of what law enforcement is up against, the agency reported that the U.S. Border Patrol recently made two major drug busts in California, totaling more than $1.2 million in street value, and the interceptions occurred within two days. According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the first bust happened last Tuesday near the San Clemente Border Patrol Checkpoint after agents stopped a suspicious-looking vehicle and a K-9 unit subsequently alerted them to narcotics hidden in an aftermarket compartment in the floorboard, leading to the discovery of 142.96 pounds of cocaine.

The seized cocaine has an estimated street value exceeding $1.1 million, and the driver of the vehicle has been handed over to the Drug Enforcement Administration, facing narcotics-related charges, while the U.S. Border Patrol seized the vehicle itself. The second bust occurred the following morning on February 19, at the Interstate 15 Temecula Border Patrol Checkpoint, where a K-9 unit once again alerted agents to the potential presence of drugs, which led to the find of 18.51 pounds of fentanyl tucked inside a backpack on the front passenger floorboard, valued at about $143,000.

Jeffrey D. Stalnaker, the Acting Chief Patrol Agent for the San Diego Sector, expressed the sector's determination. He emphasized, as per the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, "These seizures underscore San Diego Sector’s unwavering commitment to protecting our communities from the dangers of illicit narcotics," while praising the role of the Border Patrol agents and K-9 teams in combatting criminal drug operations. The incidents serve as a stark reminder of the continuous efforts by Border Patrol to curb the flow of illegal narcotics into the United States, with an impressive tally last fiscal year that included 2,862 pounds of cocaine and 782 pounds of fentanyl seized by agents in the San Diego Sector alone.
