The University of Central Florida (UCF) fraternity Phi Gamma Delta is mired in controversy due to an alleged hazing incident from 2023, wherein antisemitic symbols were purportedly used. Photographs of the hazing, dropped off anonymously at UCF's Fraternity and Sorority Life building, show blindfolded students being made to hold symbols of hate, including swastikas, without their knowledge.
According to ClickOrlando, Andrew Rollins, a reporter for Knight News, has drawn attention to this sensitive issue, stating, "UCF told us that the national chapter put them on suspension," and expressed the need for public awareness and close surveillance of the response from UCF and the fraternity, however in this pursuit, it appears there was slight haste in gathering all the facets of this story, leading to a narrative where the fraternity's president did not provide a comment on this issue, the university made a general condemnation of hazing and antisemitism, as UCF strives to maintain a safe campus environment for every student.
WESH reported that UCF has placed Phi Gamma Delta on interim action and has barred it from participating in spring rush activities pending an investigation prompted by these disturbing images. The university emphasized its zero-tolerance stance: "UCF unequivocally condemns hazing and acts of antisemitism." UCF pledges to continue efforts to eradicate hazing, a sentiment mirrored in previous statements emphasizing the commitment to a welcoming campus.
