A juvenile driver is facing multiple DUI charges following a fatal accident that claimed the life of a Las Vegas bicyclist on January 15. According to 8 News Now, Nevada State Police reported that the youth fled from a traffic stop before colliding with multiple vehicles and a bicyclist at the intersection of Lamb Boulevard and Stewart Avenue.
The crash occurred early in the morning when the underage driver, operating a Chrysler 300, first sideswiped a Mitsubishi Outlander, then continued at high speed northbound and subsequently hit a Chevrolet Tahoe. The collision's force propelled the Chrysler and Chevrolet onto the sidewalk, where Luis Sanchez Ochoa, the 41-year-old bicyclist, was then struck and killed. FOX5 Vegas reported the bicyclist collided with a brick wall following the initial impact.
The juvenile was booked into a Juvenile Detention Center on multiple counts, including "DUI resulting in death" and "Reckless driving resulting in substantial bodily harm." The driver of the Mitsubishi received hospital treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, while the drivers of the Chrysler and Chevrolet were treated on-scene for minor injuries.
Nevada State Police has since underscored the importance of having a sober designated driver and the collective responsibility to ensure safety on Nevada roadways. This incident marks the fifth fatal crash and death in 2025 that NSP has investigated. As the community grapples with the repercussions of impaired driving, officials hope this tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of driving under the influence.
