The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine softball team started their season strong, delivering back-to-back wins during a doubleheader in the Bank of Hawai'i Paradise Classic. Last Friday, the squad faced off against Saint Louis and Southern Indiana, ending the day with a spotless 3-0 record, KHON2 reports. Macy Brandl, a sophomore transfer, and senior Addison Kostrencich were both commended for pitching complete game wins against their respective opponents.
In a game that showcased both offensive and defensive prowess, the Rainbow Wahine first edged out Saint Louis with a score of 5-2. Chloe Borges contributed significantly with a two-RBI double, while their second matchup against Southern Indiana ended in a more decisive 7-2 victory, credited in part to Amelia "Millie" Fidge's two-run homer, as per Hawaii Athletics. Though Southern Indiana's Josie Newman tallied 13 strikeouts, it wasn't enough to hold back the surging Hawai'i team.
Within the game against Saint Louis, the Rainbow Wahine's defense was particularly notable during a scoreless standoff until the fourth inning. After breaking the deadlock with Borges' hit, they managed to maintain their edge despite a two-run homer from Saint Louis' Abby Mallo, which cut their lead to a single run. Hawai'i responded once more, extending their advantage with key hits by Lliliana Thomas and Izabella Martinez.
Their opposition in the second game, Southern Indiana, managed to briefly tie the score before Hawai'i once again moved ahead, with Borges notching a sacrifice fly. The Rainbow Wahine's offense really came alive in the sixth inning, the broadcast punctuated by Fidge's home run, her first since 2023, and other hits that contributed to a total rally of four runs.
The upcoming schedule sets Hawai'i against Southern Indiana once more, while the other participating teams will vie for their chance at a win in this early-season tournament.
