The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) has solidified its place in the academic stratosphere by once again securing the coveted R1 designation in the latest Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, shining a spotlight on its substantial research and development efforts, this classification identifies universities with "Very High Research Activity" and is a testament to UTEP's large-scale investment and achievement in research, according to UTEP.

With the bar set high under the new parameters from the American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching requiring an annual R&D expenditure of $50 million and the conferment of at least 70 research doctorates, UTEP easily vaults over this threshold flaunting research outlays nearing $146 million and earning its stripes for ambitious scientific inquiry and academic prowess, the experimentation with ethanol vapor on fruit flies by Dr. Paul Sabandal merely a snapshot of the extensive research happening within UTEP's labs, amidst diverse fields that range from aerospace to water and border issues which, per UTEP's release showcases the university's interdisciplinary strength.

"This reaffirmation of our R1 status validates UTEP's commitment to conducting research that addresses critical challenges facing our society," UTEP President Heather Wilson said, as obtained by UTEP, highlighting the university's distinctiveness in preserving an open-access mission while still climbing the research ranks, remaining the only R1 university in the United States with a 100% undergraduate admission rate.

Crowning the achievement is UTEP's distinction as one of the 19 Hispanic-Serving Institutions with an R1 designation from nearly 4,000 accredited degree-granting institutions nationwide standing in the top 5% for research productivity and as Ahmad M. Itani, Ph.D., vice president for research at UTEP, describes their research portfolio spans multiple critical areas, boasts of being among Texas' 16 R1 institutions more than any other state proud to contribute to the state's leadership in research and innovation, even as their educational outreach encompasses 171 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs.
