A recent incident at Valley High School where a student was arrested for making hoax threats has put the community on alert. According to a social media post by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, the student presented school staff with a digital file of a chat last Friday, that purportedly showed conversations with another user making violent threats against the school.

The threats included details about acquiring a gun and planning a shooting on a specified date, raising immediate concerns for the safety of students and staff mentioned in the messages. The student who brought forward the file initially refused to unveil the identity of the alleged co-conspirator, and hesitated to discuss the matter with law enforcement officials. Despite efforts that involved interviewing approximately 30 potential witnesses and victims, deputies were unable to trace the other user involved in the chat.

The investigative units within the Sheriff’s Office, particularly the Threat Management Unit and Hi-Tech Crimes unit, were brought in to provide support. It was not until February 10 when the student who reported the threat, in the company of her parents, agreed to talk and gave law enforcement a lead, claiming the other user was a student from a Georgia high school. This lead, however, quickly dissipated as deputies ascertained that the Georgia student was not involved.

Instead, it emerged that the Valley High student had crafted the menacing story by herself. "Deputies learned that the Valley High School student actually created the other username account the day the conversation started; and “chatted” with herself as if two different people," the Sheriff's Office disclosed. Yesterday afternoon, she was arrested on charges of criminal threats and filing a false report of an emergency. Consequently, she was taken into custody at Juvenile Hall.
