Variable Weather and Surf Advisories Impact Hawaii as Kilauea Gas Emissions LingerSource: Unsplash/ Azmaan Baluch

Weather patterns across Hawaii will vary this week, with scattered showers mainly affecting windward and mauka areas today through Thursday. The National Weather Service reports that weakened trade winds will give way to land breezes overnight, clearing up clouds and showers before returning to moderate strength over the weekend.

As winds shift to a more easterly direction, seabreezes will develop in the afternoon, causing clouds and showers to form over leeward and interior areas. An upper-level trough approaching later tonight may bring slightly more moisture, and any existing precipitation could linger or accumulate on the upslope of mountainous regions. However, no flooding concerns are expected.

With lighter winds, sea and land breezes are affecting coastal areas. The National Weather Service has extended its High Surf Advisory until this evening for east-facing shores. A Small Craft Advisory is also in effect due to seas reaching or exceeding 10 feet. The advisory for north-facing shores has been lifted after the north-northeast swell decreased.

While the Kilauea eruption has paused, volcanic gas emissions continue to affect nearby communities. With lighter winds, residents around the Big Island may notice increased hazy conditions through tonight. The National Weather Service advises the public to stay informed and prepared as Hawaii’s weather patterns change through the weekend, with dry trade wind conditions expected to return on Friday.
