A high-speed police chase through the streets of Warren has resulted in multiple injuries, including a Warren police officer and a 12-year-old girl. The chaos unfolded when a Warren police officer attempted to stop a vehicle for an improper license plate. According to CBS News Detroit, the driver identified as 33-year-old Michael Brooks, initiated a pursuit after refusing to halt, leading to a crash that injured his daughter and the officer in his wake.
Running a red light during the chase, Brooks collided with two other vehicles. The police officer involved, trying to respond, crashed in a separate incident nearby, having tried to pull over the silver Cadillac near I-696 and Dequindre prior to the chase, as described by FOX 2 Detroit. The Warren Fire Department freed the officer who received transport to the hospital, where their condition was listed as serious but stable.
Brooks faces multiple felony charges, including second-degree fleeing and eluding and third-degree child abuse. Ignoring another heartbreaking layer of irony, the license plate on Brooks' car proclaimed "Best Dad." The officer, serving for three and a half years with the department, is expected to survive, according to updates from authorities. The wounded child has been treated for minor injuries, while bystanders affected sustained no harm, as per reports by Hoodline.
The Warren Police Department is conducting an internal investigation, a standard response in such incidents. As the community absorbs the shock of the public endangerment, residents near the crash site express their dismay. Pete Gojchaj, a local business owner just feet from the crash, felt the impact on his business when authorities closed nearby entrances, telling FOX 2, "We’re open but they shut us down because they’ve got all our entrances closed. We’re getting call-in orders, but no one is able to pick them up."
With Brooks set for a court appearance next Tuesday, many are left to consider the multiple facets of the chase's aftermath and the harsh reminder it serves about road safety and the split-second decisions that law enforcement officers are faced with in the line of duty.
