The chilly season brought lively spirits to the shores of Gun Lake in Allegan County with the return of Gun Lake Winterfest, an annual gathering that highlighted the winter wonderland with a singing competition, food-eating contests, and a crowd-pleasing polar dip. Co-chair Brad Landman reminisced about the event's modest origins, stating, "The first one ever was just kind of some people cooking chili on the ice a long time ago, driving snowmobiles in an ice rink," and expressing his pride in the festival's expansion, which now includes a magician and a dog costume contest, according to WOODTV.
Enthusiasts of chilly outings were in for a treat at the Winterfest, which also featured a Vernors ginger ale drinking contest, hot wings eating competition, and a vendors’ market to showcase local businesses. William “Woody” Reaume, an ice racer, shared with WOODTV his euphoria for the event, saying, “It’s just a big way to, you know, get out and enjoy life in the Michigan winter.” The festival, which also drew visitors like Brandon Love – who anxiously anticipated the polar dip – has become a hub for family fun and new experiences, even as the temperatures plunge.
Support for local establishments surged as the festival collaborated with the General Federation of Women's Clubs- Gun Lake Chapter, infusing the community with a sense of unity and charity. A sentiment echoed by attendee Chad Gunnett in an interview with WWMT, who along with his family makes the pilgrimage to the Winterfest annually. An adventurous spirit was a prerequisite for attendees who braved the polar dip while festivities such as Gun Lake Idol and interactive audience games amplified the joyous tone of the event.
