As FOX 10 Phoenix reported, Thursday's opening round escalated quickly from putting greens to a parade of fashion greens. Spectators were spotted donning attire ranging from miniskirts to "silly shirts," and not to forget the iconic green overalls that are becoming synonymous with the WM color scheme. Speaking to the fashion parade, one attendee said, "That’s half the fun here, to come look around and see what other people are wearing, what they’re doing, hopefully not making a fool of themselves."
Organizers have promised a "better, not bigger" event, following last year's boisterous bash that saw over 50 individuals arrested and numerous others ejected from the venue. Alcohol sales were even temporarily halted for safety reasons, according to statements obtained by Axios Phoenix. The tournament, which rakes in nearly $500 million for the Valley's economy, has several new features aimed at controlling the chaos. A second entry point, digital-only ticketing, and widened pathways between holes are just some of the changes aimed at enhancing the experience and keeping the lid on any potential pandemonium. The event is not only about golf but continues to maintain its status as a must-see for those in and out of Arizona, with Nickelback set to rock the stage on Friday.
Behind the scenes, logistics have been fine-tuned to prevent last year's disorder. Some of the high-traffic areas have been redesigned to host more spectators, and menu vendors have been repositioned, addressing the bottleneck issues that exacerbated last year's disturbances. "Nothing is off the table," promised Thunderbirds executive director Chance Cozby, post-event last year. Reflecting on this year's alterations, a larger second entrance is welcoming fans while the shuffling of food and drink vendors aims to streamline the flow of the crowd, huddled with anticipation for the golfers’ next swing. The course's alterations are a nod towards an improved experience rather than an increase in restrictions, avoiding the "nuclear option" of heavily curtailing alcohol consumption, Axios Phoenix reported.
With tickets ranging from $75 to $125 for general admission, enthusiasts are still able to secure their spot to witness both the competition and the camaraderie that only the WM Phoenix Open seems able to conjure. Regulars and newcomers alike are dressing to impress, with one golfing attendee telling FOX 10 Phoenix, "I play golf, so I try to look the part and look good too. If you don’t play good, you gotta look good!"
