300-Acre Brush Fire Near New Smyrna Beach Prompts Travel Advisory, Unified Firefighter ResponseSource: The Volusia County Professional Firefighters Association

A brush fire in Volusia County, near New Smyrna Beach, has consumed over 300 acres of land, prompting dedicated efforts from multiple fire departments and a travel advisory for the surrounding area. The fire, located west of New Smyrna Beach, near Samsula, has been fought by crews from Volusia, Flagler, New Smyrna Beach, and the Florida Forestry Services, according to FOX 35 Orlando. Authorities have yet to determine the cause, and with shifting winds, it’s uncertain how long to contain the fire fully could take.

The consequences of the fire included the rescue of an elderly woman, Isabel Bond, who was nearly encircled by the flames. "I was amazed to see it that close," Bond told WFTV following her rescue, facilitated by Volusia County Fire and Rescue and a neighbor.

Despite no homes being burned and no mandatory evacuations ordered, the nearby residents, like Fletcher Turner, have had to prepare for the worst quickly. "If I see flames coming this way, I’m heading back there, and I’m getting my wife and saying we’re out of here," Turner said in a statement detailed by FOX 35 Orlando. The Daytona Beach News-Journal reported that the fire began earlier and expanded rapidly, moving through more than 100 acres by late afternoon.

The Volusia County Professional Firefighters Association, via their Facebook page, posted updates on the fire's progression, reassuring that no homes were in immediate danger.

At the State Road 44 and Airport Road intersection, smoke has been so heavily affecting visibility that authorities have placed warning signs along the roadways.
