A violent confrontation erupted at California State Prison, Sacramento, also known as New Folsom Prison, on Wednesday morning, leading to the stabbing of six inmates during what officials have described as a riot involving approximately 40 prisoners. According to ABC10, the clash drew a significant emergency response with 22 firefighters dispatched across seven ambulances, two fire engines, and a fire truck arriving shortly after 10 a.m.;
During the incident, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) escalated the situation to a code three riot, the Folsom Fire Department ended up upgrading the call to a multi-casualty incident due to the severity of the situation, according to CBS Sacramento, and prison officials resorted to using chemical agents and non-lethal weapons in an attempt to quell the violence. Out of the six injured, five were taken to local hospitals and their conditions were reported not to be life-threatening; one inmate remained at the facility for treatment. The yards of the institution were put on lockdown as authorities handled the emergency.
The CDCR also declared that a total of 11 makeshift weapons were recovered at the chaotic scene, reflecting a grim reality of violence that pervades the correctional environment. Lieutenant David Gonzales, a spokesman for CSP-SAC, stated that officials are still gathering information and have not yet released a full account of the incident to the public.
