Anoka County has a flurry of community-focused events and improvements on the horizon as detailed in a recent series of briefs. At the forefront, the Anoka County Board of Commissioners Chair Mike Gamache announced the upcoming Anoka County Senior Expo scheduled for April 5 at Lord of Life Church, Ramsey. From a free pancake breakfast to entertainment by Todd "Elvis" Anderson, the expo aims to serve the senior community with a range of services. Details on this event are available here.
In the technology domain, Anoka County will continue to quickly embrace the future with a license renewal agreement with NearMap US, Inc. The board has approved this partnership to capture aerial imagery for both governmental and public utility across two years, specifically providing spring and fall flyover captures. This data is set to be an invaluable asset for various county agencies.
Focusing on accessibility, the board has confirmed the acceptance of $400,000 in funding from the State of Minnesota. This injection of capital will be directed towards enhancing the Blaine Human Service Center's facilities to better serve those with disabilities. Planned upgrades include restrooms, a production room, kitchen, lunchroom, common areas, and renovations to the client day room.
The strategic planning process has also yielded the approval of the 2026 budget development guidelines as the board looks to further refine its budgeting mechanisms. This initiative, part of a broader goal to streamline the financial processes of the county, sets the stage for more efficient and effective budget management. Grant funding has also been a boon for the county's youth, with a new grant accepted to not only offer but expand employment training services, courtesy of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. More about these youth-centered programs can be found here.
Further exerting their commitment to the well-being of its youngest residents, Anoka County has designated April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. The local government is actively supporting prevention initiatives in partnership with Children and Family Services, Public Health, and other community programs. In a parallel effort to reinforce community safety, the Sheriff's Office has received generous donations, including $4,000 from the Anoka County Crime Prevention Coalition, new factory ammunition, and a ballistic proof vest for K9 units.
The safety and efficiency of Anoka County's infrastructure are also set to receive a substantial boost. A significant update comes with the planned introduction of a new emergency communications system to replace the outdated 911 alerts. This development aims to significantly boost the efficacy of public safety information dissemination. Local roads are also getting much-needed attention, with confirmed improvements for Sunset Ave.. in Blaine and Lino Lakes, as well as an upcoming project on Highway 47 in St. Francis. Additionally, Fridley will see pedestrian trail enhancements along 44th Avenue NE and a bridge deck replacement, bolstering the area's infrastructure for more secure and convenient navigation.
