The charter for American Virtual Academy, known to most as Primavera Online School, is on the chopping block following a recent announcement from State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne. The Arizona State Board for Charter Schools has issued a notice to close the school due to poor academic performance. Horne stated the school has failed to meet standards and must be held accountable.
"My first priority for all public schools is academic success. It is important that charters and district schools alike are held accountable for the quality of education they provide," said Superintendent Horne in a statement made by the Arizona Department of Education website. This move affirms that Horne is intent on ensuring that accountability is more than lip service.
Horne, who also sits on the charter board, saw his designee, Wendy Miller, cast a vote in favor of revocation. Primavera Online School, under the American Virtual Academy umbrella, has been under scrutiny not just from Horne but also from those who closely monitor education standards and outcomes.
