Arlington County will launch a drone-based deer population survey in late March to monitor the spread of white-tailed deer in the area. The study will replicate a 2021 survey and is part of the county's Deer Management Program, which aims to protect local ecosystems and public safety.
According to the Arlington County release, the survey will take place from Monday to Friday next week, excluding Federal properties, with drones flying during early morning and evening hours. Although drones are typically restricted within a 15-mile radius of Washington, D.C., these drones have received clearance due to coordination with federal agencies, including the FAA and TSA.
The drones will use high-tech tools like thermal imaging, visual spectrum imagery, and GPS to collect data. Officials have assured the public that the low-resolution imagery used to verify deer populations will not capture detailed images of people. Results from the survey will be shared on the county's Deer Management Program webpage, where residents can also sign up for updates.
