In a bold step toward the future of urban transport, Arlington's RAPID autonomous vehicle (AV) service has surpassed the landmark figure of 100,000 rides, as per a recent announcement by May Mobility, the technology company behind the AV deployment. Revolutionizing the way students and staff at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) traverse their surroundings, the pilot program has been making strides since its initiation in March 2021. The service extends an efficient, on-demand transit solution to the university community, with many riders comprising those lacking personal vehicles.

Teaming up with May Mobility, Via, and UTA, the City of Arlington has worked on delivering this innovative transport option with destinations concentrated around the UTA campus and the downtown area. Students from across the United States and over 100 countries make up the diverse body who, without their transport, rely heavily on the RAPID AV service as an affordable and dependable mode of transit. According to a series of rider surveys, 67% of these riders are university students who utilize the AVs primarily for school and work-related commutes. The surveys indicate that 75% of the respondents have annual earnings below $35,000, and half do not own a vehicle, making this service an integral part of their daily life.

The AVs from May Mobility are engineered with the company's patented Multi-Policy Decision Making (MPDM) technology, which employs artificial intelligence to handle a myriad of situations on the road swiftly and efficiently. Ideally suited for pedestrian-rich campus environments, MPDM allows these vehicles to analyze thousands of potential scenarios every second to ascertain the safest course of action. This feature significantly contributes to the 96% of riders reporting a feeling of safety during their journeys in the AVs, echoing the technology's focus on secure transport.

RAPID's free service to university students and staff ($3 for others) has greatly impacted local transit habits, offering a network of 35 pickup and drop-off points. The fleet, consisting of four autonomous vehicles with a wheelchair-accessible option, provides seamless connectivity for various needs. The service boasts an impressive weekly ridership of over 1,000 and a rider satisfaction rate averaging 4.9 out of 5 stars.
