Early this morning, a confrontation in a Home Depot parking lot on Staten Island escalated into a deadly shootout involving police officers and a 55-year-old man armed with a gun. According to a report by ABC7 New York, officers from the 123rd Precinct responded to a report of an armed individual in a black Jeep Wrangler around 5:20 a.m. Assistant Chief Melissa Eger of the NYPD said that the officers tactically positioned themselves behind their police vehicles and repeatedly instructed the suspect to show his hands and drop his gun.
The suspect, whose identity has not been released but is known to have a documented arrest history, failed to comply with the officers' repeated instructions. Having heard gunshots on arrival, two of the responding NYPD officers were taken to a hospital in stable condition — a precautionary measure as they were not struck by gunfire. The man reportedly pointed his gun at the officers, prompting five uniformed officers to discharge their weapons, striking him multiple times. NBC New York described the scene as showing "signs of chaos, with shopping carts overturned on the pavement."
"Multiple officers repeatedly instructed him to show his hands and drop his firearm, which is all confirmed on body worn camera footage. The male did not comply and pointed the firearm at the officers, five uniformed officers discharged their firearms, the male was struck numerous times," Eger told ABC7 New York. After the shooting, officers immediately performed life-saving measures, and the man was taken to Staten Island University Hospital North, where he was pronounced dead. A gun, along with numerous shell casings and live ammunition, was recovered at the scene, and the incident continues to be under investigation.
NYPD officials, speaking to NBC New York, confirmed that there is available footage from body cameras and security cameras that supports the officers' account of the event.
