Residents looking to deepen their understanding of housing rights and resources are in for a month of informative experiences, as Athens-Clarke County gears up for a series of events catering to fair housing and community development this April. The Housing & Community Development Department (HCD) of ACCGov is helming these educational gatherings, and in the spirit of accessibility, they have kept admission free for all attendees.

Mark your calendars for the Tenants' Rights Forum on April 10, where attorney Chad McCranie from the Georgia Legal Services Program will outline legal protections related to housing. Adding to the conversation, ACCGov's Code Enforcement Department will present housing standards and the local code enforcement process. Eager to educate, the forum will take place at the Dougherty St. Governmental Auditorium from 5:30-7:30 PM. According to ACCGov's announcement, this session is designed to empower tenants with knowledge that safeguards their housing experience.

As the month continues, the Fair Housing Rights Lunch & Learn Forum presents a compelling reason to skip your regular lunch plans on April 23. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with Gail Williams, a fair housing advocate from Metro Fair Housing Services, Inc. The session delves into the complexities of fair housing from search to residency, addressing how to navigate potential discrimination issues. Interested participants are asked to RSVP for a light lunch by April 16, with the event slated to run between 10:00 AM and Noon at the ACC Library Multipurpose Room A.

The series culminates with the Community Development Resource Fair on April 26, convening a congregation of local programs and services geared towards community enrichment. From housing assistance to educational and environmental initiatives, a range of representatives will be on hand to share resources and answer questions at the ACC Library's Multipurpose Rooms B-C. Said fair, which operates from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, seeks to connect locals with actionable support to foster community advancement. Organizations interested in exhibiting are prompted to take part in a survey to secure a spot, with tables being assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Information regarding the survey and the events can be found on ACCGov's website.

These April events are framed within the broader context of National Fair Housing Month and National Community Development Week, reflecting a nationwide push towards more equitable living conditions.
