Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has introduced a new mural to its collection, honoring former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn. The artwork, titled "Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant, The Carters," depicted the couple in a vibrantly colored cosmos, adding a touch of wonder to the travel hub's ambiance. Fabian Williams, the Atlanta artist known for his impactful murals, is the creative force behind the piece. This installation coincides with the recent unveiling of the Carters' final resting place by The Jimmy Carter National Historical Park, adding to the series of commemorations for the couple's legacy.
The mural is prominently placed above the north baggage claim in the domestic terminal for all to see. FOX5 Atlanta reports that Williams, who also crafted the official poster for Carter’s 100th birthday, detailed its development on Instagram, proudly proclaiming, "I’m pretty proud of how this is turning out." The scene encapsulates the Carters amidst stars and galaxies, with beautiful sunset hues woven into their attire, echoing both their earthly contributions and the boundless reach of their work.
President Carter, who ascended to the centennial mark on October 1, 2024, before passing away on December 29th the same year, has been honored for his long list of achievements. A Navy veteran, he served as Georgia governor from 1971-75, and as a Georgia state senator from 1963-67. His presidential tenure spanned from 1977 to 1981. 11Alive notes that Carter, the only president from Georgia, leaves behind a resilient philanthropic and political partnership with his wife, that lasted for more than 77 years.
Rosalynn Carter, who passed away at age 96 on November 19, 2023, is remembered for her tireless support alongside her husband. The couple’s notable marriage and combined efforts in humanitarianism and advocacy are enshrined in initiatives like The Carter Center, dedicated to democracy, human rights, and disease eradication globally. As the mural finds its home in Atlanta's bustling airport, it serves as a reminder of the Carters' everlasting contributions to a nation and the broader world, a fitting tribute to two lives dedicated to service and to each other.
