With the mercury rising and e-bikes buzzing down the streets, Atlantic Beach's police force is stepping up its game. In a bid to keep the summer safe for both pedal pushers and pedestrians, the Atlantic Beach Police Department, along with cohorts from Neptune Beach and Jacksonville Beach, are rolling out heightened enforcement. This tightly-spoked operation aims to keep cyclists and e-bikers in line with the law, according to an announcement from the City of Atlantic Beach departments.
Atlantic Beach's Chief Victor Gualillo articulated the mission clearly: "We are committed to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for all residents and visitors," he said, as per the City of Atlantic Beach website. Adding, "As e-bike use increases, it's crucial that we work to ensure responsible operation and adherence to traffic regulations." Backing his words with action, the ABPD is cracking down yesterday and today, scrutinizing bikers at every turn—be it a reckless swerve or an ignored stop sign.
The enforcers in blue have a particular set of targets: pedestrian safety, traffic law obedience, speed limits, and essential equipment – think lights, brakes, and bells. If you're pedaling without paying heed to the rules or zipping faster than what's considered safe for a sidewalk stroll, expect to attract the police's attention.
