
Authorities are investigating a homicide that occurred near the University of Texas at Austin campus over the weekend. The Austin Police Department, responding to multiple 911 calls just after 4 p.m. on Saturday, found a Hispanic man shot at the intersection of the Interstate 35 service road southbound and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, as per a report by KVUE. Despite efforts from police, EMS, and firefighters, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, displaying "obvious signs of trauma."
One person of interest has been taken into custody by the police, though their relationship to the deceased is not currently known, according to CBS Austin. The incident, which happened around 4:09 p.m., is being looked at as Austin's seventh homicide of the year. The Austin Police Department arrived to the scene shortly after receiving the calls and attempted life-saving measures on the individual, however, were unable to revive him.
The area around E Martin Luther King Jr Blvd & S I-35 Service Rd was urged to be avoided by the public while the initial phase of the investigation was underway. The name and the age of the victim has not been made available as of yet. The APD has stated that there is no known threat to the public at this time.
