The hiring of Andrew Robert Britt, a 27-year-old teacher at Baltimore's Liberty Elementary School, is being scrutinized following his alleged involvement in the recent shooting of a Baltimore County police officer. This case has sparked discussion around the Baltimore City Public Schools' hiring practices. Britt, who began his teaching role in December 2022, stands accused of attempted first-degree murder and associated charges after the confrontation that transpired last Thursday at the Wilkens Precinct parking lot in Catonsville, as reported by WMAR2 News.
Despite the fact Britt was previously convicted of carrying a loaded handgun illegally in a vehicle in November 2021 and was therefore prohibited from firearms possession in the state of Maryland, Baltimore City Public Schools hired Britt and now endorses its decision, citing the positive assessment of his qualifications and contributions, according to statements detailed by Baltimore County Fraternal Order of Police.
The incident in question began when Britt allegedly engaged in a verbal exchange with an officer at a gas pump outside the precinct, leading to a fatal altercation where he fired at the officer and later was met with return fire by the police, ending with both Britt and the officer sustaining injuries. The officer, however, was released from the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center after undergoing surgery and is now in guarded condition. The altercation, described as "premeditated" by Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough, ensued after Britt conversed with a desk officer through a glass window, later stepping outside where he initiated the shooting, wherein he injured Officer J. Riddick and was apprehended following a shootout with officers B. Smith and J. Wright according to CBS News Baltimore.
Despite awaiting another preliminary hearing scheduled for April 11th, Britt remains under treatment at the shock trauma center following the shooting incident.
