
A traffic incident occurred last Thursday morning on Kaua'i's Kaumuali‘i Highway involving a collision between a bicyclist and a vehicle. At around 7:30 a.m., a 79-year-old Kekaha man on his bicycle veered into the roadway, a truck drove by a 47-year-old Kapa‘a man, which led to the accident. The bicyclist sustained serious injuries from the collision, as reported by the County of Kaua'i.
The Kauaʻi Police Department stated that the bicyclist, who was heading westward, not equipped with a helmet, was struck by the Toyota truck. After the impact, he was promptly transported to Wilcox Medical Center in a critical state. While the driver of the vehicle did not report any injuries and cooperated with the authorities at the scene, according to the County of Kaua'i.
Following the incident, there was a temporary closure of the highway in both directions for about one and a half hours to allow the Traffic Safety Section officers to carry out their investigation on site. Subsequent traffic diversions rerouted vehicles to ‘Elepaio Road. The Kauaʻi Police Department has indicated that neither speed nor impairment seem to have contributed to the occurrence of the crash, as per the County of Kaua'i.
