Senators Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Mike Crapo (R-ID), and John Hickenlooper (D-CO) have reintroduced the Fighter Force Preservation and Recapitalization Act to maintain the U.S. Air Force's fighter fleet. The bill focuses on the 39 service-retained, combat-coded fighter squadrons. Kelly said, “Maintaining a strong and capable Air Force fighter fleet is essential for defending our nation and ensuring our strategic advantage in the face of global threats.” The legislation aims to prevent further reductions in the fighter fleet and ensure squadrons are trained and equipped, according to the Office of the Senator.
A bipartisan bill supported by multiple senators aims to strengthen Air National Guard squadrons by addressing the loss of experienced pilots and maintainers due to squadron closures. Senator Crapo said, "We must preserve and protect National Guard fighter squadrons," referencing Idaho's 190th Fighter Squadron. Senator Hickenlooper stated, "Our bipartisan bill directs the Air Force to update all National Guard fighter squadrons," including Colorado's 140th Wing, to ensure they continue their missions and retain personnel, as reported by the Office of the Senator.
Major General Francis McGinn (Ret.), President of the National Guard Association of the United States, and Maj Gen Kerry Muehlenbeck expressed support for legislation focused on investment and modernization of the Air National Guard’s fighter force. McGinn stated, “The Air National Guard is a critical part of that equation, making up 30 percent of USAF combat air power with only 7 percent of the total Air Force budget.” The legislation, part of the Fiscal Year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act, directs the Air Force to develop a plan for sustaining and upgrading its fighter fleets, with a focus on the Air National Guard, as stated by the Office of the Senator.
