The National Weather Service in El Paso has issued a Blowing Dust Advisory and Wind Advisory for various parts of south central and southwest New Mexico and Far West Texas. These advisories are in effect from 11 AM today until 7 PM MST this evening. Residents in the region can expect to face southwest winds reaching 25 to 35 mph, with potential gusts up to 50 mph.
According to the National Weather Service, visibility may drop to between one-quarter and one-mile due to the blowing dust. This could severely impact driving conditions, making it hazardous for motorists. Power outages are also a possibility, along with the potential for downed tree limbs, and unsecured objects being blown around.
People with respiratory issues are advised to stay indoors to avoid adverse health effects from the dust. Drivers who encounter dust storms on the roadways are urged to 'Pull Aside, Stay Alive' by pulling off the road as far as possible, switching off their vehicle lights, and refraining from using the brake pedal, to avoid collisions in the low-visibility conditions.
The NWS also recommends that residents in the affected regions secure any outdoor objects to prevent them from being turned into projectiles by the strong winds. High profile vehicles will likely experience difficulties on the road, and extra caution is advised for those drivers.
