Boston commuters, brace yourselves for a maze of detours and delays as the city gears up for a string of events and construction work that will alter travel routes and disrupt normal traffic flow. According to a traffic advisory released by the City of Boston, residents and visitors can expect parking restrictions and street closures to unfold in the coming days.
Charlestown and North End will experience changes due to MassDOT's announcement of a new traffic pattern at City Square intersection starting Sunday, March 30, as detailed by the City of Boston. Due to pavement construction, the northbound lanes from the North Washington Street Bridge will be reduced, which may lead to traffic congestion. MassDOT advises: "Drivers should expect delays in the outbound direction and are encouraged to seek alternate routes if possible." Inbound traffic toward the Bill Russell Bridge will not be affected. The roadwork is scheduled for completion by Monday evening, March 31.
The MBTA will close the Red Line from JFK/UMass to Ashmont and Mattapan between April 1-9 for critical track renewal work. During this period, passengers will need to use alternative transportation options. The MBTA will provide fare-free Commuter Rail service and shuttle buses, which may add up to 60 minutes to travel time. Additionally, BlueBikes is offering five free unlocks with the code REDAPR25.
Parking will be restricted on several streets, including portions of Dorchester Ave, Geneva Ave, Charles St, Savin Hill Ave, and River St, to accommodate shuttle stops and buses. Additionally, MBTA's emergency bridge work on Dorchester Ave and Adams St near Fields Corner will result in periodic lane reductions, potentially increasing travel times. With ongoing road races, parades, and street fairs, traffic conditions in Boston will be subject to change as these events take place.
