The Boulder Police Department has marked a significant milestone, securing its first-ever international accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), a recognition that places it among the top tier of law enforcement agencies worldwide who meet the highest professional standards, the agency announced Saturday during a conference in California, which punctuated an exhaustive three-year endeavor to elevate policing practices within the community.

"We voluntarily took on this challenge to show our commitment to being a model agency and to certify that we are in line with the best practices in policing. We are part of only 5 percent of police agencies in the world who have achieved the gold standard in public safety," Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn stated, as per the Boulder Police Department. Boulder's Reimagine Policing Plan, a community-crafted strategy aimed at reforming police practices, alongside innovative crime reduction and public engagement efforts, was specifically touted during CALEA evaluations, which assessed the department's commitment to transparency, accountability, and professional integrity.

In attendance at the CALEA conference were Boulder's Police Chief Redfearn, Deputy Chief Ron Gosage, and Commander Greg LeFebre, who participated in a hearing to demonstrate their department’s rigorous policy alignment efforts; the initiatives highlighted include their Reimagine Policing Plan, leaning on Problem-Oriented Policing to curb crime rates, and the implementation of progressive community engagement and officer wellness programs that have garnered auditor commendation.

The accreditation means that Boulder Police must now maintain the rigorous standards set forth by CALEA, providing annual proofs of compliance to ensure that their operations remain transparent, accountable and held to a continuous oath of service excellence, their documented policies can be accessed by the public on the BPD website for review, as part of the department's commitment to maintain its newly acquired status as a benchmark in law enforcement professionalism.

"Accreditation is a powerful tool for ensuring that we stop and reflect on the ways in which we are delivering our services," said Nuria Rivera-Vandermyde, Boulder’s City Manager, as obtained by Boulder Police Department, acknowledging the comprehensive review that one of three city departments underwent this year to attain such esteemed recognition. The rigorous process and successful outcomes highlight Boulder Police's tireless effort to not only achieve but to persistently uphold the high standards expected of CALEA-accredited institutions.
