Denver is waking up to clear skies and temperatures around 64 degrees Sunday morning, but the easygoing start will not last all day. The mercury is expected to climb to 88 before afternoon showers, and thunderstorms move into the metro area, making the timing of outdoor plans especially important.
Storms Arrive Around Lunch
The first slight chance of showers and thunderstorms arrives between noon and 1 p.m., with rain chances increasing through the afternoon and peaking around 40%. The National Weather Service Denver/Boulder office says rainfall should generally be light, but storms could still produce sudden gusty winds as they move through.
Winds will start from the southwest at 5 to 9 mph before shifting more westerly and northwesterly during the afternoon. The best window for patios, parks and outdoor errands is the morning, before the sky gets more interesting.
A Wetter Monday Follows
Sunday night will turn mostly cloudy, with a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm before 7 p.m. Monday brings a high near 85 degrees, a 60% chance of afternoon and evening storms, and a low around 60 Monday night.
Showers and thunderstorms are likely Monday night, when the precipitation chance rises to 70%. The National Weather Service describes Monday as the wettest day in the near-term forecast, so outdoor plans may need a backup location.
Sunny, Hot Weather Returns Midweek
Storm chances drop sharply Tuesday, which will reach about 86 degrees and partly sunny skies. Wednesday through Saturday look mostly sunny and hotter, with highs near 90 Wednesday, 91 Thursday, and 92 Friday and Saturday, plus only slight afternoon storm chances.

No watches or warnings are posted for the Denver area. Even so, anyone caught outside during thunder should head indoors, since a brief storm can bring lightning, rain, and a burst of wind with little notice.
