The Boulder County Sheriff's Office shared a post detailing the operational savvy of ASCII, an Electronic Storage Detection (ESD) K-9 integral to the Boulder County Digital Forensics Lab (BCDFL). In digital forensics, where electronic evidence can be easily hidden, ASCII the dog, with Investigator Matt Beers, has become a key player in sniffing out evidence concealed from the naked eye. The team recently demonstrated their effectiveness during a search in a home flagged for hidden cameras, where ASCII's talent provided "much-needed peace of mind," as mentioned by Boulder County Sheriff's Office.
This dog is part of a larger collaboration amongst local agencies, including the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, Boulder County District Attorney's Office, Boulder Police Department, and Longmont Department of Public Safety. They all work closely together to support the community, focusing on digital forensics and enforcement against Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC). ASCII is more than just a trained dog, she is an asset that helps to quickly and efficiently tackle the complexities of these often-frustrating cases.
Digital evidence encompasses anything from incriminating emails to evidence of financial fraud and can be hidden in the most innocuous places. In this digital age, where tech can be both ally and adversary, work like ASCII's has grown increasingly vital. The BCDFL and its ESD K-9 are not only furthering investigations but are also stepping in to assure residents about their security in places they should feel most safe.
