The City of Boulder is set to fortify its defenses against wildfire threats with a substantial boost from the state. A grant of $900,000 has been awarded by the Colorado Department of Natural Resources’ Colorado Strategic Wildfire Action Program, designed to bolster the city's resilience against potential wildfire disasters.
Spanning about 100 acres on city-owned property to the west of Boulder, the fuels reduction project will clear vegetation that could potentially feed a wildfire, running from the Kossler Reservoir on Flagstaff Road north to the Boulder Canyon Hydroelectric Generation Facility. The work of the project will not only serve the forests but also seek to protect pivotal infrastructure, crucial for the city's power and drinking water supply.
According to the City of Boulder, this initiative "will help improve forest health and protect vital infrastructure, including drinking water, hydroelectric facilities and key powerlines." In addition, the project's goal is to impede the spread of wildfires while simultaneously ensuring safe and timely access for first responders.
