Tragedy struck in Brownsville, Brooklyn, as police discovered the decomposing bodies of a woman and her young son in their apartment yesterday afternoon. According to Gothamist, officers were called to the scene around 2 p.m. after reports surfaced about a foul odor coming from an apartment at Unity Plaza Complex on Dumont Avenue. The NYPD has identified the deceased as a 33-year-old woman and a 7-year-old boy, and they were both pronounced dead by emergency medical workers upon their arrival.
Further details revealed by Eyewitness News include the absence of obvious signs of trauma on the victims and no indicators of forced entry to the apartment. The investigation is still actively trying to piece together the events that led to these untimely deaths. Neighbors told Eyewitness News that the woman kept to herself, hardly ever emerging from the confines of her home. "She never came out. She didn't open the door for anybody. Never. Never opened the door for anybody. Even if you knocked she never opened," one neighbor recalled.
The names of the victims have yet to be released as NYPD officials continue to investigate their relationship and the circumstances surrounding their deaths. It is also still unclear how long the bodies had been decomposing before the discovery. The City Medical Examiner’s office is working to determine the exact causes of death, which remain unknown at this time.
Residents of the community have been left to grapple with the unsettling news. One neighbor's reaction was captured by Eyewitness News, reflecting the general shock felt throughout the area: "I mean everyone is shocked in the building from this. Like God knows whatever happened in there."
