On a mission to alleviate the worry of pet owners facing tough times, Hays County Pet Resource Center and the Central Texas Food Bank teamed up to keep tails wagging with their drive-up food distribution event. Hays County residents found support at McCormick Middle School in Buda, where the initiative rolled out its latest effort to deliver sustenance for both people and pets this Saturday morning. Highlighting community need, the event marked the first of the year and the fifth of its kind in the locality.

With open access for all residents of Hays County, the event organizers ensured that the physical presence of pets was not a barrier to receiving aid, as reported by Dining and Cooking. Attendants were welcomed to drive up and receive food supplies for their furry friends, which was much-needed assistance considering that many are often torn between feeding their families and their pets. This initiative seeks to relieve such difficult choices.

Hays County Commissioner for Precinct 2, Michelle Cohen, underscored the significance of regular support events. "I've always believed in consistency," Cohen told CBS Austin. "The more regular distribution events that we have, the more people start finding out about it, the more people start coming." Her emphasis was on building a reliable support system that the community could count on, reflecting a deep understanding of how ongoing assistance is foundational in addressing the challenges of food insecurity.

The cumulative impact of these events is notable. Last year, over 1,500 pets received food assistance through four events hosted by the collaborative effort between Central Texas Food Bank and Hays County PRC. "As a county, we really try and focus on trying to keep the pets with their family," said Commissioner Cohen in a statement obtained by CBS Austin. By lessening the burden on pet owners, the organizers hope to provide enough resources to help families and their pets make it through the coming month, which further cements their commitment to the animal members of Hays County households.
